UFC Suspends Bruno Silva for Six Months Due to Anti-Doping Violation

UFC middleweight Bruno "Blindado" Silva has been handed a six-month suspension following a failed drug test in April, as announced by the UFC's anti-doping wing, CSAD (Combat Sports Anti-Doping). Silva tested positive for 3a-Hydroxy-2a-methyl-5a-androstan-17-one, a metabolite of the anabolic steroid drostanolone, in a urine sample submitted on April 11.
Despite the positive test, CSAD determined that the violation was "likely unintentional." This conclusion was based on the fact that Silva's subsequent urine samples, submitted on March 30, April 30, and June 11, all returned negative results. The levels of the substance in the April 11 sample suggested contamination rather than deliberate use, and Silva's cooperation throughout the investigation was taken into account.
This suspension marks Silva's first anti-doping violation under CSAD. However, it's worth noting that Silva was previously suspended for two years by USADA in 2022 for a positive test for boldenone, another anabolic steroid. CSAD noted that it disagreed with USADA's findings in that case, particularly regarding the likelihood of boldenone contamination from meats, supplements, or creams, and therefore did not treat this latest incident as a second violation under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy.
As of now, Silva and his team have not made any public comments regarding the suspension. The 35-year-old fighter, who is currently on a three-fight losing streak, is eligible to return to competition on October 11. His last fight was in March, where he lost in a controversial decision to Chris Weidman.
