What Happened?

McAvoy, 27, one of Boston’s top defensemen, suffered the injury to his right acromioclavicular (AC) joint during Team USA’s Feb. 13 matchup against Finland. Despite receiving immediate treatment from Team USA's medical staff, led by Dr. Joel Boyd, McAvoy powered through and logged 19:27 of ice time in a huge win over Canada on Saturday night—delivering one of the tournament’s most talked-about hits on Connor McDavid.

But things took a turn when McAvoy returned to Boston and began experiencing worsening pain. After being evaluated by the Bruins' medical staff, he was ruled out for Monday’s game against Sweden, where Jake Sanderson(Ottawa Senators) stepped into his spot.

The Bruins later confirmed that McAvoy had been admitted to the hospital, where further X-rays, MRIs, and bloodwork revealed the infection. Team USA head coach Mike Sullivan, who is also McAvoy’s father-in-law, acknowledged that losing one of his best defensemen ahead of the championship game against Canada is a major setback.

"It’s tough. Charlie is a terrific hockey player and a big part of this team. He’s played extremely well in this tournament. When you lose players of that caliber, they’re not easy to replace," Sullivan said Tuesday. "I know how much this tournament meant to him, but we have capable guys, and this is a chance for others to step up."

Can Team USA Add a Replacement?

With McAvoy out, speculation has swirled about whether Team USA can add another defenseman. Tournament rules only allow roster additions if multiple defensemen are unavailable, meaning the U.S. would need another blue-liner to be ruled out before making a move.

There were initial reports that Vancouver Canucks star Quinn Hughes, originally on the roster but sidelined with an injury, could join the team in Boston as a replacement.
