Twenty-three million dollars is a lot to pay for a new conference address. James Madison isn't writing that check from its own budget. According to the Daily News-Record in Harrisonburg, new corporate sponsorship deals arranged at the conference level will cover JMU's record entrance fee to the American Conference.
How JMU's American Conference Fees Get Paid
JMU announced on October 12 that it will leave the Sun Belt and join the American no later than July 1, 2028. The university's own announcement says private gifts cover the Sun Belt exit fee and new corporate partner agreements fund the entry fee, with no tuition, student fees or state tax money involved.
The Daily News-Record put numbers on it. The exit fee is about $5 million, paid by individual donors. The entry fee is $23 million, which the paper called a record for now. The sponsors JMU is bringing to the league haven't been announced, and those deals depend on JMU actually becoming a member.
The model has a precedent. Athletic director Matt Roan pointed to the way Memphis tied FedEx to its own move, which he called "The FedEx strategy."
JMU's Entrance Fee Compared With Recent Moves
- James Madison to the American: $23 million
- Sacramento State: $18 million
- North Dakota State: $12.5 million
- Northern Illinois: $2 million
Those comparisons come from the Daily News-Record. The payoff JMU expects is about $7 million a year in American media-rights revenue, roughly $5 million to $6 million more than its current Sun Belt share, per the same report. Memphis and Tulane receive about $12 million a year.
JMU Football Brings a Playoff Resume to the American
The football team is a big part of why the American wanted JMU. The Dukes went 12-2 in 2025 and 8-0 in Sun Belt play, then reached the College Football Playoff, where they lost 51-34 to Oregon in the first round, according to CollegeFootballData.com. They are 7-0 this season, 4-0 in conference, per the same data.
Seventeen of JMU's 18 sports will move to the American, with field hockey staying in the Mid-American Conference. JMU plans to exit the Sun Belt by summer 2027 and be a full American member by July 2028, so this unbeaten run still counts toward a Sun Belt title. The sponsor names are the next piece of the puzzle to watch.
