Kenya's last record Youth Olympic team had 18 athletes. The one heading to Senegal has 53. Kenya will compete in 13 sports at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, which run October 31 to November 13, according to Eyewitness News.
Forty-two of the 53 are young women, about 79 percent of the squad.
Why Kenya's Dakar 2026 Team Is Bigger Than Ever
Kenya is known for distance running, and that isn't changing. The point of this team is to show it can produce talent in other sports too, with an eye on the Los Angeles Games in 2028 and Brisbane in 2032, per EWN. The athletes trained with their federations around school schedules, and the delegation will gather for a residential camp in Mombasa before flying to Senegal.
Chef de Mission Angela Luchivya said the plan was built so athletes could keep up with school while getting ready, describing it as a way to "continue with their education as well as preparing for Dakar." Support staff will cover medical care, physiotherapy, mental health, safeguarding, nutrition, exam scheduling and anti-doping education.
Kenya Baseball5 Opens Against France
One sport to watch is Baseball5, the fast street version of baseball and softball played with a rubber ball and no bats or gloves. Kenya and host Senegal are Africa's two teams in the event, according to Citizen Digital.
Kenya opens against France on October 30 and plays Mexico on October 31, then finishes group play against Syria. Head coach Joe Wangicho credited the team's recent trip to Botswana for valuable international experience, and Baseball5 Kenya secretary general Patrick Ndunda called the group a team to watch.
Africa's First Olympic Event
Dakar 2026 is the first Olympic event ever held in Africa. The organizing committee told the IOC it is in the final stretch of testing, with close to 23,000 volunteer registrations, per Olympics.com. EWN put the expected field at about 3,000 athletes under 18 from 206 countries.
Kenya's first Baseball5 game comes a day before the Opening Ceremony on October 31. Follow the Games and more international youth sports on BallerTube's Olympics page.
