Cooper Newman owns both of the big ones now. The Sevier County senior quarterback became Tennessee's all-time leader in career passing yards in last Friday's 42-20 win over Tennessee High, two weeks after he took the state's career touchdown pass record.

Newman, a Class of 2027 UConn commit, came into the night needing a big game and got one. He finished 15 of 21 for 340 yards and five touchdowns, according to On3. A 53-yard touchdown pass to Zach Banks pushed him past the old mark, per the USA TODAY Network's game report.

Cooper Newman Passes Kyle Akin's Tennessee Record

The record had belonged to Kyle Akin, who played at Trinity Christian Academy from 2011 to 2014. Newman's career total now sits at 11,131 yards, per On3. Sevier County is 6-2.

The touchdown record fell first. On Oct. 2 against Cocke County, Newman threw his 132nd career touchdown pass, a 31-yard strike to Brayden Maples in the first quarter, passing former Christian Academy of Knoxville quarterback Charlie High (131 from 2010 to 2012), as Knox News reported. He has added to that total every week since.

A Two-Time State Finalist at Sevier County

None of this is a surprise to anyone who has watched the Smoky Bears. Newman has led Sevier County to the last two TSSAA Class 5A title games. The Bears went 15-0 and beat Page 27-20 for the 2024 championship, with Newman named the game's MVP, then lost a 21-14 rematch to Page last December. He was the 2025 Tennessee Titans Mr. Football for Class 5A and committed to UConn in June.

The record chase isn't over. Every yard and touchdown from here on raises the bar for whoever comes next, and Sevier County still has the rest of its regular season before another shot at the Class 5A playoffs.
