The Atlanta Dream shot well enough to beat the Golden State Valkyries on Tuesday night. What turned Game 3 of the WNBA Finals into a 97-71 rout was what Atlanta did with its hands. The Dream came away with nine steals, forced 17 turnovers and turned them into 22 points, per ESPN's box score, and now lead the best-of-seven series 2-1.
Rhyne Howard had five of those steals on her own, to go with 16 points and seven free throws in 27 minutes. Angel Reese added three steals to her 21 points and 12 rebounds, and she did it efficiently: 7 of 12 from the floor, 2 of 2 from three and 5 of 5 at the line.
Golden State Could Not Get Inside
The Valkyries made 12 threes but only 24 of 69 shots overall, a 35 percent night, and scored just 20 points in the paint to Atlanta's 44. Gabby Williams carried the offense with 15 points and eight assists but needed 18 shots to get there and committed four turnovers. Cecilia Zandalasini was the one bright spot from outside, 4 of 6 from three for 13 points. Kiah Stokes grabbed 11 rebounds but scored two points.
Atlanta led 23-15 after one quarter, held a 46-40 lead at the half and then won the second half 51-31. Golden State managed 14 points in the fourth quarter.
Six Dream Players in Double Figures
Naz Hillmon gave Atlanta 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting with three threes and was plus-17 in her 27 minutes. Jordin Canada ran the offense with eight assists, 10 points and six rebounds, and the Dream assisted on 26 of their 34 baskets while turning it over only eight times. DeWanna Bonner added seven off the bench.
Golden State won Game 1 at home 68-64 before Atlanta took Game 2 there 79-65 and then Game 3 at State Farm Arena. Game 4 is Saturday afternoon in Atlanta, with a Game 5 in San Francisco on Monday if the Valkyries extend it. Stats from the ESPN box score.
