Santa Margarita went into Bellflower on Friday, October 16, scored twice off St. John Bosco turnovers and did not allow a point after the first quarter. The 21-7 road win put the Eagles at 8-0 and in control of the Trinity League race, and it moved them up one spot to No. 2 in this week's MaxPreps national Top 25, behind only St. Thomas Aquinas of Fort Lauderdale.

St. John Bosco dropped three places to No. 11 at 6-2. The Braves had the game's first touchdown, a 28-yard pass from quarterback Koa Malau'ulu to Kuika Moaalii in the first quarter, and nothing after it.

Rayshawn Brandon's Pick-Six and Adrian Petero's Short Score

Santa Margarita answered the Bosco touchdown on defense. Rayshawn Brandon intercepted Malau'ulu and returned it for a touchdown to tie the game at 7, according to High School On SI's game report. In the second quarter Ca'ron Williams picked off a second pass, and the Eagles turned that takeaway into a short touchdown run by Adrian Petero for a 14-7 halftime lead.

The third-quarter score that closed it out came from a pair of first-year starters. Quarterback Fletch Palmer, the son of head coach Carson Palmer, hit Grant Mosley on a long touchdown pass to make it 21-7. Freshman Kiyan Callis led the Eagles in receiving, per the same report.

Bosco's Offense Held to Its Season Low

MaxPreps lists St. John Bosco at 286 points scored and 160 allowed through eight games, an average of 35.8 a night. Seven points is the fewest the Braves have managed this season. Their other losses came by 10 against Bishop Gorman in the opener and by a point, 60-59, against Ayala in September.

The Eagles have now beaten both Trinity League powers in October. They took down Mater Dei 14-7 on October 2 before holding Bosco to a touchdown, and both of those wins came with the defense keeping a top-25 offense under 10 points. Last season the league title was shared three ways between Santa Margarita, Bosco and Mater Dei.

Bosco plays at Servite on Friday, October 23, then hosts Mater Dei on October 30, per the team schedule on MaxPreps. Follow the California playoff push on BallerTube's high school football page.
