Santa Margarita's 21-7 win over St. John Bosco last Friday left the Trinity League with one unbeaten team and two 6-2 chasers. Both chasers play on Friday, October 23. St. John Bosco, No. 11 in the MaxPreps national Top 25, visits Servite, and No. 19 Mater Dei hosts Orange Lutheran at the Santa Ana Bowl. Both kick off at 7 p.m.
St. John Bosco at Servite
Bosco comes in averaging 35.8 points and allowing 20.0, per MaxPreps' matchup page, and it is looking to bounce back from its first single-digit scoring night of the season. Servite is 3-5 and has been in a lot of close games: 213 points scored, 217 allowed, which works out to 26.6 a game for and 27.1 against. The Friars lost 38-15 to Mater Dei on October 15 in their last outing.
The Braves' schedule has had no soft spots since September. They beat JSerra 40-14 and Orange Lutheran 28-14 in October before the Santa Margarita loss, and their two other defeats came against Bishop Gorman and Ayala. Bosco's last game of the regular season is Mater Dei on October 30.
Orange Lutheran at Mater Dei, Homecoming at the Santa Ana Bowl
Mater Dei's defense is the number to watch. The Monarchs have allowed 129 points in eight games, 16.1 a night, the lowest figure of the four teams playing Friday, while scoring 25.6. Their two losses were to Bishop Gorman, 25-8, and to Santa Margarita, 14-7. Mater Dei's school site lists Friday as its homecoming game.
Orange Lutheran is 5-3 and scoring 30.8 a game against 19.2 allowed. The Lancers beat JSerra 48-13 on October 16 after losing to Bosco the week before. The Orange Lutheran athletics schedule lists the trip to Mater Dei as its next-to-last regular-season game.
Elsewhere in the Top 25 on Friday
No. 16 Hough of Cornelius, North Carolina, is 8-0 and hosts Myers Park at 7 p.m. in a Charlotte-area game, per the statewide Week 10 schedule published on Yahoo Sports. Prattville of Alabama, 8-0, is the week's biggest mover in the MaxPreps rankings, up 77 spots to No. 21.
