Luther Burden III was thrown the ball four times on Thursday night. He caught all four, for 130 yards, and the last of them was the play that broke open Chicago's 30-24 win over New England. The second-year receiver averaged 32.5 yards a catch, per ESPN's box score, with a long of 58, and his 24-yard touchdown from Caleb Williams with 14 seconds left in the first half put the Chicago Bears up 20-7.
The Bears (5-2) won at Soldier Field in front of 60,520. The New England Patriots fell to 4-3.
Chicago Did Not Give the Ball Away
The quiet number was zero. Chicago had no turnovers, went 2 for 2 on fourth down and scored touchdowns on three of its four red zone trips. New England was 1 for 2 in the red zone and 2 for 7 on third down, and its one giveaway was a D'Marco Jackson interception of Drake Maye.
Williams finished 22 of 33 for 308 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. His second scoring throw, 12 yards to Colston Loveland in the third quarter, made it 27-14. Loveland, the other second-year target, caught seven of 12 targets for 69 yards. D'Andre Swift carried 22 times for 78 yards and a 4-yard touchdown.
Maye Kept New England Close
Maye was sharp, 24 of 31 for 321 yards and two touchdowns, plus a 7-yard scoring run. Rhamondre Stevenson answered Burden's touchdown with a 48-yard scoring catch on the last play of the half, and Eli Raridon's 30-yard touchdown pulled the Patriots within 27-21 late in the third. Cairo Santos then hit a 58-yard field goal with 1:34 to play, his third of the night, and New England's 47-yard answer came too late.
Both teams get extra rest after the Thursday game. New England visits Miami on Sunday, Nov. 1, and Chicago plays at Seattle on Monday night, Nov. 2. Stats from the ESPN box score.
