Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl combined for 10 points on Thursday night, two goals and three assists each. When the Edmonton Oilers needed one more, neither could beat Carolina goalie Brandon Bussi in the shootout. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins did, the only shootout goal of the night, and Edmonton beat the Carolina Hurricanes 6-5 at Rogers Place.

It was a meeting of two of the league's best starts. Edmonton moved to 8-1-1 and Carolina to 8-2-2, per ESPN's scoreboard.

Edmonton's Power Play Covered the Gap

Carolina had more of the game. The Hurricanes outshot Edmonton 27-21, out-hit the Oilers 30-17 and won 52.5 percent of the faceoffs. The difference was special teams: Edmonton went 3 for 5 on the power play while Carolina converted one of its two chances.

The Hurricanes led 4-2 after second-period goals from Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis and Logan Stankoven. McDavid and Draisaitl scored less than three minutes apart early in the third to tie it. Juuso Valimaki put Carolina back in front 5-4 late in the period, and McDavid tied it again on a deflection with under two minutes left, Draisaitl assisting.

Bussi and Levi in the Shootout

Bussi made 16 saves on 21 shots and then stopped McDavid and Draisaitl. Devon Levi made 22 saves on 27 for Edmonton and turned away Shayne Gostisbehere; Andrei Svechnikov and Jarvis both missed the net. Nugent-Hopkins, who also scored in the second period, finished with a goal and an assist in regulation. Evan Bouchard logged a game-high 29:59.

Edmonton hosts Toronto on Saturday. Carolina visits St. Louis the same night. Stats from the ESPN box score.
