The pitch everyone will remember from Game 1 came first: Jacob Misiorowski's opening fastball to Yandy Diaz clocked 103.5 mph, a World Series velocity record. The outs that decided it came much later. Aaron Ashby took over with one out in the seventh inning and retired all five Tampa Bay hitters he faced, three of them on strikeouts, and the Milwaukee Brewers held on to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 on Friday night.
The Brewers (103-59 in the regular season) lead the series 1-0 after the win in front of 43,250 at American Family Field. The Rays went 98-64.
Jackson Chourio Drove In the Run That Held Up
Milwaukee scored twice in the first. Jackson Chourio singled and scored on Christian Yelich's triple, and William Contreras singled Yelich home. Tampa Bay got one back in the fourth on a Liam Hicks groundout, and the game sat at 2-1 until the seventh, when Cooper Pratt walked and Chourio singled to right off Kevin Kelly with two out. That run turned out to be the winner. Chourio finished 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI, per ESPN's box score.
Misiorowski gave Milwaukee five innings, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts on 78 pitches. Abner Uribe got four outs, two by strikeout, before handing it to Ashby. Rays starter Nick Martinez matched him for five innings with five strikeouts and no walks, but allowed both first-inning runs.
A Tense Ninth for Trevor Megill
The ninth got loud. Jonathan Aranda, 3 for 3 with a walk, singled, Chandler Simpson followed, and the pair pulled a double steal. Junior Caminero walked to load the bases, and what looked like a game-ending double play was overturned on review, letting pinch runner Jorge Mateo score. Megill then struck out Jonny DeLuca to end it.
Game 2 is set for Saturday night in Milwaukee. Stats from the ESPN box score; the velocity mark was reported by the Associated Press. More baseball on our World Series page.
