Nobody had put more than 25 points on Hamilton all season. Liberty scored 38 on Friday night. The Liberty Lions beat the Hamilton Huskies 38-7 in Peoria, ending the perfect start of a team that sat No. 15 in the MaxPreps national rankings and No. 1 in High School On SI's Arizona top 25.
Both teams are now 7-1, per MaxPreps data pulled through Parse. Liberty came in No. 3 in the SI Arizona rankings at 6-1.
Hamilton's Defense Had Been Allowing 11.4 Points a Game
The scoreline is what makes this one stand out. Before Friday, Hamilton had allowed 80 points in seven games, with two shutouts (44-0 over Arbor View of Las Vegas and 59-0 over Valley Vista) and no opponent above the 25 Casteel scored on Sept. 18. Liberty scored nearly half that total in one night. Hamilton's season line is now 285 points scored and 118 allowed.
Liberty's offense has been doing this to everyone. The Lions have scored 344 points in eight games, 43.0 a game, while allowing 13.2.
Arizona's Top Spot Is Open
USA TODAY's regional Super 15 for the West, updated after Friday's games, listed the result as a 38-7 Liberty win and had Hamilton at No. 5 and Liberty at No. 11. In Arizona, that leaves the state's top spot open for the next SI rankings, with Chandler (No. 2 in the last poll) a 79-0 winner over Valley Vista on Friday, per the same USA TODAY list.
Hamilton, coached by Travis Dixon, hosts Cactus Canyon on Friday, Oct. 30, and then plays Chandler on Thursday, Nov. 5. Team numbers come from MaxPreps; the result was confirmed by USA TODAY Sports' Super 15 scores and the pregame standings by High School On SI. Follow more on our high school football page.
