ROAD TO REDEMPTION | 2018-19 Norfolk State Basketball Before the championships that would follow, there was Road to Redemption. Filmed from August 2018 through March 2019, this documentary takes you inside Norfolk State Men’s Basketball and follows Coach Robert Jones and the Spartans throughout a season built around responding to adversity. The year before, Norfolk State finished 14–19 overall and 11–5 in the MEAC, ending its 2017–18 season with a loss to North Carolina A&T in the MEAC Tournament quarterfinals. The 2018–19 team responded. Norfolk State went 22–14 overall and 14–2 in conference play, finishing first in the MEAC and capturing the program’s second MEAC regular-season championship — and the first under Head Coach Robert Jones. Jones was also named MEAC Coach of the Year. The Spartans fought their way to the 2019 MEAC Championship Game, where their pursuit of an NCAA Tournament berth came down to the final moments. Norfolk State ultimately fell to North Carolina Central, 50–47. But the story didn’t end there. Norfolk State earned a trip to the NIT and went on the road to defeat No. 1 seed Alabama, advancing to the second round and putting an exclamation point on one of the most memorable seasons of the Coach Jones era.
