Louisville, KY — July 13, 2025
What started as one of the largest girls’ basketball tournaments in the nation descended into chaos Sunday when a reported altercation sent thousands fleeing from the Kentucky Exposition Center. Official reports from Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) have downplayed the incident as a “false alarm,” but eyewitnesses tell a very different—and far more alarming—story.

Panic at the Kentucky Expo Center

Around 3:15 p.m., players, parents, and coaches participating in the Run 4 The Roses Classic sprinted from courts and food areas after a loud commotion erupted inside the facility. Screams echoed as teams abandoned their games, some leaving personal belongings and gear behind.

Police quickly arrived and locked down the area, later stating that “no evidence of shots fired” was found and there were “no active aggressors.” According to official statements, the panic was allegedly caused by a combination of a medical emergency, a falling ceiling tile striking a metal surface, and a triggered fire alarm.

Eyewitness Accounts Paint a Different Picture

Contrary to the LMPD narrative, multiple attendees are reporting gunfire.

In a text obtained by BallerTube, one coach told us:

“Two fathers got into an argument in the food court. One pulled a gun; two shots fired. Someone was hit and a glass door was hit. Apparently, the owner of our program saw the door.”

This account, shared widely among players and staff in private group chats, directly conflicts with the public statements from law enforcement.

Social media posts captured moments of the chaos, with users describing “loud pops,” frantic stampedes, and visible injuries caused during the rush to exit. One TikTok user wrote:

“Everyone was screaming ‘shots fired’ … this wasn’t just a drill.”

Despite these claims, no local news outlets have reported injuries consistent with gunfire, and LMPD has made no mention of arrests or suspects.

Social Media Erupts

Videos circulating on Instagram and TikTok show hundreds of athletes and spectators running for safety. Some attendees claim they saw shattered glass near a food court entrance—though no photos of such damage have been confirmed.

One Instagram story, now viral, captioned the footage:
“Run 4 Roses? More like Run 4 Cover.”

The Stakes for Louisville

The Run 4 The Roses Classic is a cornerstone summer event in Louisville, drawing 9,000+ players, 2,000 college coaches, and an estimated $20 million in tourism revenue for the city. A confirmed shooting could severely damage its reputation and economic impact.

This has led some parents and coaches to question whether LMPD and organizers are intentionally keeping details quiet.

“It’s about money. They don’t want this tournament tainted,” said one parent who asked to remain anonymous.

The conflicting accounts raise serious questions. Witnesses claim two shots were fired in the food court, a person was hit, and a glass door was damaged—claims that the program owner reportedly saw firsthand. Meanwhile, the official narrative insists there was only a loud noise caused by a falling ceiling tile and a triggered fire alarm, with no victims sustaining gun-related injuries and no evidence of a shooting found by LMPD. Why haven’t these witness reports been addressed directly? Are there surveillance cameras inside the Kentucky Exposition Center that could confirm or deny whether gunfire occurred?

Calls for Transparency

The discrepancy between what people on the ground experienced and what authorities have reported is stark. With thousands of minors present, parents and programs are demanding answers.

“We deserve to know the truth. Was there a gun or not? Why are there so many people saying the same thing if it didn’t happen?” asked a coach whose team evacuated mid-game.

 What’s Next

Run 4 The Roses resumed play on Monday with heightened security, including bag checks and handheld metal detectors. LMPD says the investigation is ongoing but maintains there is no evidence of an active shooter.
