The youth sports company that just bought LakePoint has hired one of the people who built the Ripken brand to sell it. Capacity Sports Group named Mike Kenney its chief revenue officer on Wednesday.

Kenney ran Ripken Baseball as CEO from 2019 to 2024, according to the company's announcement on PR Newswire. Ripken Select and the All-Ripken Games launched on his watch. Before that he spent more than a decade at the Harlem Globetrotters, where he was executive vice president.

What Capacity Sports Group Owns

Capacity formed in January through the merger of Prep Baseball and Bullpen Ventures. Its portfolio now covers baseball, softball, soccer, flag football, lacrosse, basketball and volleyball through brands that include Prep Baseball, Bullpen Tournaments, Top Tier, Play9 Sports, United Sports, YSC Sports, Flag Football Life and Ryze Hoops, plus the LakePoint Sports complex near Atlanta.

Kenney's job is commercial partnerships and growth across events, facilities and programming. CEO Ken Kocher said the company is building toward being "the leading platform in youth sports."

Capacity's Growing Front Office

Kenney is the latest in a run of hires behind Kocher and president Blake Hibler. The company has also added Dan LeBlanc as chief operating officer, Surry Wood as senior vice president of mergers and acquisitions, Kristen Ajamie as chief of staff and John Vardzel as director of corporate development, as Buying Sandlot laid out Wednesday.

An M&A chief and a revenue chief in the same year tells you the plan: buy more events and facilities, then sell more sponsorship against them. For families, that usually shows up as more branded tournaments, more showcase fees and more of the calendar running through a handful of big operators.
