For most of Sunday night in Foxborough, Inter Miami's best player was its right back. Ian Fray made 13 defensive interventions, the most by anyone on the field, while New England controlled 54.9 percent of the ball and took seven corners to Miami's one.
Then Lionel Messi took over. Inter Miami beat the New England Revolution 2-1 at Gillette Stadium in front of 54,112, moving into second place in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of New England with one regular-season match left.
Six Shots on Target to Three
New England had 13 shots to Miami's 14 but put only three on goal, per the ESPN match stats. Miami put six on target. Dániel Gazdag gave the Revolution the lead in the 53rd minute, assisted by Ilay Feingold.
Messi headed the ball across to Germán Berterame, who headed in the equalizer in the 69th minute. In the 83rd, Messi finished a Telasco Segovia pass with his left foot for the winner. Messi had two of Miami's six shots on target and four shots in all. Berterame led everyone with five shots, three on target.
Messi's 26th Goal and a Champions Cup Spot
The goal was Messi's league-leading 26th, and the win clinched Miami a place in next year's Concacaf Champions Cup, according to the Associated Press. It was Miami's 10th road win this season. Dayne St. Clair made two saves; Matt Turner made three for New England, whose four-match winning streak ended.
