Two games this week carry more than a ranking. In south Georgia, the No. 1 team in Class 3A has to beat the No. 3 team to win its region outright. In Louisville, the top team in MaxPreps' Kentucky rankings opens the playoffs against an opponent coming off its best win of the year.
Pierce County at Appling County: Region 3-3A on the Line
Appling County (9-0) rose to No. 1 in Class 3A in the AJC Varsity rankings after beating the previous No. 1, Toombs County, 11-7 on Oct. 30. The Pirates need to win their final regular-season game, against No. 3 Pierce County (8-1), to win Region 3-3A outright, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A Pierce County win would likely leave a three-way tie at the top with Toombs.
The region has carried three of the state's top three Class 3A teams for much of the fall. The Blackshear Times counted Region 3 as only the 24th region in 74 years of AJC polls to hold all three top spots at once. Pierce County's only loss came at Toombs County, 28-6, on Sept. 26. The game is Friday, Nov. 6, the last week of the Georgia regular season.
Pleasure Ridge Park at Trinity: Kentucky Class 6A Playoffs
Trinity sits No. 1 in MaxPreps' Kentucky rankings at 9-1 with a 99.75 rating, the highest in the state, and No. 21 in the national MaxPreps Top 25, per data pulled through MaxPreps' feed. The Shamrocks open the Class 6A playoffs at home against Pleasure Ridge Park, the No. 4 seed from Region Two, according to the first-round pairings published by High School On SI. First-round games run Nov. 5 to 7.
Pleasure Ridge Park enters with momentum. It beat Lexington Christian, then No. 8 in the On SI Kentucky Top 25, by a 50-43 score on Oct. 30. Lexington Christian is No. 21 in the MaxPreps Kentucky rankings at 8-2.
