Last season Daniil Tarasov backed up Sergei Bobrovsky in Sunrise. On Monday he went back there in a Detroit sweater and stopped 23 of 26 shots.
The Detroit Red Wings beat the Florida Panthers 5-3 and snapped Florida's three-game winning streak. Detroit is 7-5-3 and 6-2-1 in its last nine. Florida is 8-5-2.
Detroit's 17 Blocked Shots and a Clean Penalty Kill
Tarasov had help. The Red Wings blocked 17 shots to Florida's 8, with Michael Rasmussen and William Wallinder blocking four each, according to the ESPN box score. Florida went 0 for 2 on the power play; Detroit scored on one of its three.
That power-play goal decided it. Justin Faulk scored it 2:08 into the third period for a 3-2 lead, and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard beat Jacob Markstrom from the slot 45 seconds later, per the Associated Press recap. Faulk finished with a goal and an assist. Carter Mazur scored his first NHL goal to open the scoring, Alex DeBrincat got his seventh of the season and Emmitt Finnie added an empty-netter.
Florida Panthers Never Led
Sam Reinhart scored his eighth, Aaron Ekblad scored short-handed for his first of the season and Sam Bennett got his fourth. Markstrom made 24 saves in his first game since Oct. 17. The Panthers outhit Detroit 41-19 and still never held a lead.
AP noted the Atlantic Division had eight teams within six points entering Monday, and Detroit was still tied for the fewest. The Red Wings play at Tampa Bay on Tuesday. Florida hosts Chicago on Wednesday. More hockey is on the BallerTube NHL page.
