Scarborough held Camden Hills scoreless for more than 97 minutes in Saturday's Maine Class A girls soccer final. The 98th belonged to Molly Williams. The Camden Hills junior forward scored early in the second overtime for a 1-0 win at Kennebunk High School's Memorial Field, her 51st goal of the season and the one that finished an unbeaten year.

The goal total is a school record. The Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel reported that Williams passed the previous Camden Hills mark of 49, set in 2019 by Kristina Kelly, who was named national player of the year that fall. Hoffer's High School Sports described the final as Camden Hills' first state championship in seven years, against a Scarborough team that came in 15-0-1 as the South champion.

Four Goals in the Regional Final, 11 in the Playoffs

Williams' single best game came four days earlier. In the Class A North final on Nov. 3, she scored four times in a 5-1 win over Mt. Ararat, reaching 50 goals for the season with 11 of them in the playoffs, according to the Portland Press Herald. Eve Domareki scored the other goal that night. Camden Hills, coached by Meredith Messer, was 17-0 entering the state final and finished the season without a loss.

What 51 Goals Means in Maine Soccer

High school soccer games in Maine run 80 minutes, so Williams averaged close to three goals a game across an 18-game season while facing the best defenses in the state in the playoffs. The 51st came in a game where the opponent had allowed almost nothing all year, which is the kind of number recruiters notice. Williams is a junior, so she has one more fall season at Camden Hills.
