Central Catholic's defense is the reason the Pittsburgh school sits No. 19 in the MaxPreps national rankings. The Vikings have allowed 71 points in nine games, 7.9 a game, and on Thursday night Hempfield got none of them.
Central Catholic beat Hempfield 45-0 to win the WPIAL Class 6A Quad County Conference championship and finish the regular season 9-0. The score is confirmed by the EasternPAFootball statewide scoreboard and the WPIAL Insider, which called it the conference championship.
The Numbers Behind the 9-0 Start
Central Catholic has outscored opponents 445-71 this season, an average of 49.4 points scored and 7.9 allowed, per MaxPreps. That is a margin of 41.5 points a game.
Hempfield was not an easy draw. The Spartans scored 271 points in their first nine games, more than 30 a game, and came in at 6-3. They leave at 6-4 and still have the WPIAL playoffs ahead.
Why This Is a Team Spotlight
Central Catholic's points come from everywhere, and no individual stat line from Thursday was reported by two outlets by Friday morning, so this week's spotlight goes to the unit. In the MaxPreps national top 25 published Oct. 26, Central Catholic is one of 17 teams without a loss.
What's Next
