A year ago Oliver Horton set the course record at the Colorado state cross country meet. On Saturday he took almost eight more seconds off it.
The Coronado senior won the Class 4A boys title in 14:40.6 at the Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs on Oct. 31, according to the Colorado High School Activities Association. His record from 2025 was 14:48.1. CHSAA listed 14:40.52 as the all-classification course record.
Oliver Horton's Numbers: 14:40.6 and a 17-Second Margin
Golden's Jackson Ferguson was second in 14:58.1, so Horton won by about 17.5 seconds. The Colorado Springs Gazette also reported the margin at about 18 seconds and confirmed it was his second straight 4A title.
For scale: Northfield's Abdi Hassan won the 5A race in 14:56.41, itself a 5A classification record, per CHSAA. Horton was more than 15 seconds faster than any runner in the state's largest class.
"I was thinking about last year the whole race," Horton told CHSAA.
Coronado Third as Summit Wins the Team Title
Summit won its first boys cross country state title. Coronado, the defending 4A team champion, finished third.
Horton, a North Carolina commit according to the Gazette, plans to run at Nike Cross Regionals Southwest on Nov. 21 and at the Brooks XC national championships in December. More cross country is on the BallerTube cross country page.
