LAFC had the ball for 57 percent of Sunday's derby, took 21 shots and won 12 corners to the Galaxy's one. The LA Galaxy still left BMO Stadium with a 2-2 draw, because Joseph Paintsil finished the two chances that mattered and defender John Nelson made 14 defensive interventions, per ESPN's match stats.

The point leaves LAFC at 12 wins, 11 draws and 9 losses (47 points) and the Galaxy at 10-11-11 (41 points). ESPN reported that the draw clinched a playoff spot for LAFC, sixth in the Western Conference, while the Galaxy sit ninth.

Joseph Paintsil's First Goals Since August

Paintsil scored in the 34th minute off a fast break set up by Robert Taylor, then made it 2-0 in the 51st when Hugo Lloris spilled a rebound to him. ESPN noted they were his first goals since August.

LAFC answered within two minutes: Denis Bouanga scored in the 53rd for his 18th goal in 30 MLS matches, and Leo Walta tied it in the 62nd. Only 5 of LAFC's 21 shots were on target, and Galaxy goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski made three saves. A late Bouanga redirect was ruled offside, and Son Heung-Min had a first-half goal taken off by video review for offside. ESPN noted the all-time El Tráfico series now stands at 10 wins apiece with eight draws.
