Spanish soccer is mourning Jesus de Miguel, a 30-year-old CD Tenerife forward who died on Tuesday, a day after a collision in the final minutes of a second-division match against FC Andorra.
De Miguel was chasing a long ball near midfield in added time on Monday, with the score 2-2, when Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono came out of his area and struck him in the chest, according to the Associated Press report on ESPN. Owono was shown a straight red card and the match was abandoned. Tenerife said De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest. Argentina's La Nacion also reported the collision with Owono and the 2-2 score.
Jesus de Miguel's Career: From Leganes B to Tenerife
A Madrid native, De Miguel began with Leganes B in 2015 and worked his way through Spain's lower divisions before joining Tenerife in 2025. Spanish media report he is survived by his wife and daughter. At the family's request, his body will be taken to Navahermosa, in Toledo province, for a farewell with teammates and club officials.
Spanish Soccer and UEFA Respond
The Spanish federation postponed Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches from Tuesday through Thursday, and UEFA held a minute of silence at its matches this week. Tenerife asked for its Saturday league match at Granada to be postponed, and fans plan to gather at the club's stadium on Saturday. Andorra and its owner, Gerard Pique, sent condolences.
Spain's National Police opened an investigation, as Spanish law requires after a death from non-natural causes. The Santa Cruz de Tenerife chief prosecutor, Jose Luis Sanchez-Jauregui, said criminal proceedings were unlikely because the collision happened during play. The precise medical cause of death has not been released.
