The fall season is wrapping up and the winter tournament calendar is filling in. For a lot of families, that means more Saturdays and Sundays spent at a field complex or a gym two hours from home.
The travel is not in anyone's head. The Aspen Institute's Project Play parent survey, released in 2025 with Utah State and Louisiana Tech, found family spending on a child's main sport rose 46 percent from 2019 to 2024. The survey of 1,848 parents named travel and lodging for games outside the area as one of the main drivers, alongside registration fees and private training. NerdWallet's breakdown of travel sports costs, republished this spring, points to the same 46 percent rise.
More time on the road changes what parents pack. Talk to anyone who has worked a tournament weekend and the list comes back about the same.
Get everything there in one trip
The parking lot is usually far from the field. That is why the collapsible wagon has become standard sideline equipment. It carries the chairs, the cooler and the bags in one load, then folds flat for the trunk.
The trunk itself is the next problem. A simple organizer with compartments keeps cleats, balls and snacks in one place instead of rolling around the cargo area all weekend.
Shade, seats and the cold
Early games start cold and afternoon games can be hot. Parents bring their own seat either way. A canopy chair handles the sun. For the cold months, rechargeable hand warmers have replaced the single-use packets for a lot of families.
Keep the phone alive and film the game
Phones run the whole weekend: schedules, brackets, directions and video. A power bank with a built-in cable means one less cord to forget. Parents who film every game have moved from holding the phone up for an hour to tracking gimbals that follow the play on their own.
Many venues also limit bag sizes now, so a clear stadium bag is worth keeping in the car.
Gift ideas for the sideline parent
We put the picks that come up again and again in one place:
- Gifts for Sports Moms 2026: wagons, chairs, warmers and filming gear
- Gifts for parents who film youth sports
- Stocking stuffers for athletes
Tournament season does not slow down until spring. The right gear will not make the drive shorter, but it can make the weekend easier.
